The Type 81 SR is an short-medium range marksman version of the Type 81 rifle family. The rifle was designed with a number of changes over the standard Type 81 to support its role including:
Heavy profile barrel for increased accuracy
Thumbhole stock for better ergonomics in precision shooting positions (including reversible cheekrest for LH shooting)
Flat bottom extended handguard for more stability when shooting from rested surfaces
5 Round waffle-pattern magazine for bench and prone shooting capability
Threaded muzzle for attachment of optional accessories
Adjustable trigger stop screw for added precision
Lightened trigger pull weight for added precision
Offered in deep blued finish over satin-finish wood stock, with threaded receiver pins ready to accept side-mount optics. Comes with one 5/5 magazine, oil bottle and manual. The Type 81 is a gas operated, magazine fed, semi-automatic rifle. It uses a short-stroke gas piston, located above the barrel, and a two-position gas regulator. The bolt group (of the rotating bolt type) is borrowed from the Type 63 rifle. Type 81 rifles also retains the Type 63 bolt hold-open device, which catches the bolt in the open position after the last round has been fired from magazine. The fire selector safety switch is located at the right side of the receiver, just above the pistol grip, and can be easily operated with the right hand thumb. The open sights are marked from 100 to 500 meters, with the front sight being mounted just ahead of the gas block.
Developed by the Chinese military as a replacement for their Type 56 rifles (license produced AK-47). Was designed to have a longer service life, higher accuracy, improved durability and better controllability in full automatic firing. The Type 81 is used by multiple military and police forces across the globe.
Important Notes: There is a second trigger stop screw included in the delivery kit, the one installed in the firearm is too long. The use of blue loctite is recommended for both the trigger stop screw and the threaded scope mount pins, to retain position during repeated use. During testing some occasional shell casing deflections were noted on sunshade, however the deflections were secondary and no noted impact to POI was observed. Some light casing marks may develop over use on sunshade that are only aesthetic in nature. The accuracy potential of the SR is very ammunition dependent, with best results achieved with Hornady Black 123 GR SST and American Eagle 124 GR FMJ, (av. 5 shot groups at 100 yards@ 1.5-3 MOA). Mixed results observed with other brands. 100 round break-in period was observed, whereby groups began to tighten up further after that point.
